Cherry hits the market fresh off a logging job, and green cherry looks a lot like dry cherry to an untrained eye. Sellers know this.
Seasoned wood commands roughly $40 to $80 more per cord than green, so the incentive to blur the line is built in.
Wood above 20 percent moisture burns cool. A chunk of the fire's energy goes to boiling water out of the log instead of heating your room. The unburned smoke condenses in the flue as creosote, and that is a chimney fire waiting on a cold night.

Sellers describe volume in truck loads. Buyers picture something completely different. Here's the translation.
A full cord of split hardwood weighs roughly 2,500 to 3,500 pounds seasoned, more than a half-ton pickup should carry.
Expect two to three level loads in a standard 8-foot bed, or three to four in a short bed. Anyone promising a full cord in one pickup trip is either driving a dump truck or shorting you.
Piece count runs about 600 to 800 splits per full cord at 16-inch lengths, though split size swings that wide. A half cord stacks to 4 feet tall and 8 feet long at 16 inches deep. One tree yields anywhere from a third of a cord to a full cord depending on trunk diameter.
Use the stack, not the pile. Loose-thrown wood occupies 20 to 30 percent more space than the same wood stacked, which is exactly why a truck bed heaped high can still fall short of what you paid for.
Check the Stack Before the Truck Leaves
Two checks at delivery catch both of the ways cherry buyers lose money. Do them while the driver is still there, because both get much harder to argue an hour later.
