Pea gravel vs. crushed stone: when to use each
The choice between pea gravel and crushed stone is a structural question, not a cosmetic one. They behave differently under load, water, and foot traffic because of their shape — and picking the wrong one creates problems that are expensive to fix.
Pea gravel (⅜" washed, rounded) drains freely because the uniform rounded stones leave large voids between them — water passes straight through. That makes it ideal for French drain backfill, around foundation perimeter drains, and under permeable paver installations. The rounded shape also makes it comfortable to walk on barefoot, which is why it dominates for garden paths, playground surfaces, and between patio pavers.
The downside: pea gravel does not compact. Rounded stones have no angular faces to interlock — they roll past each other under pressure. Under vehicle tires, pea gravel ruts, displaces, and migrates out of the driveway within months. It needs rigid edging (steel, plastic, or timber) to stay contained, and it shifts with freeze-thaw cycles in cold climates.
Crushed stone (¾" minus, angular) compacts into a dense, stable surface because the angular fragments and mixed fines interlock mechanically under a plate compactor. Standard for driveway base courses, under concrete slabs, and structural fill behind retaining walls. The fines fill voids between larger stones, creating a surface that resists displacement under vehicle loads.
The downside: crushed stone is rough underfoot, dusty in dry weather, and its angular edges can cut bare feet. Poor choice for decorative beds, paths, or any area where appearance and comfort matter. Also drains less freely than pea gravel — the fines partially block water flow.
The rule: if people drive on it or a slab sits on it, use crushed stone. If people walk on it or water needs to drain through it, use pea gravel. Mixing the two in the same layer defeats the purpose of both — fines contaminate the drain path, and rounded stones weaken the compacted base.

Installation: edging, fabric, and drainage
Pea gravel migrates. Without edging, the rounded stones roll outward from foot traffic, rainfall runoff, and gravity on any slope. Landscape fabric goes under every pea gravel installation that sits on soil. Without it, the rounded stones sink into the subgrade within a single season — you lose depth and the gravel starts mixing with dirt. Use woven geotextile, not solid plastic sheeting. Water must pass through the fabric for drainage; plastic creates puddles that undermine the gravel surface and breed mosquitoes. Pin the fabric every 3 ft with U-shaped landscape staples, overlap seams 6 inches minimum, and fold fabric up at edging borders to prevent side migration.
Drainage slope: pea gravel drains freely, but the subgrade beneath it must slope away from structures. Minimum 1–2% grade (1–2 inches of drop per 8 feet of run).
